In the “Sakaki” chapter of The Tale of Genji, it is described how Hikaru Genji, after being rejected by Fujitsubo whom he loved, considers becoming a monk and takes refuge in Unrinin. This location has been famous for centuries as it has been the setting for many literary works. In excavations carried out in 2000 in the eastern area of the ruins of Unrinin, remains of ponds, buildings, wells, and more from the Heian period were discovered.
