下鴨神社は鴨川デルタとともに左京区出町柳エリアのシンボルともなっており、その一体は地域住民の皆が愛する憩いの場となっています。KeFUから少し遠いですが、葵祭や御手洗まつりや流鏑馬などの行事が行われるので、季節ごとに見どころがあります。世界遺産に登録されている神社として有名です。
下鴨神社は源氏物語の「須磨」の巻に出てきます。帝への謀反の疑いをかけられた光源氏が須磨に流される前に、下鴨神社の糺の森で「憂き世をば今ぞ別るるとどまらむ名をば糺の神にまかせて」という歌を詠むシーンがあります。当時、糺の森（ただすのもり）は禁足地で悪人が踏み入ると罰が当たると信じられていました。無実の罪を負った光源氏は、自分に罪があるかどうかを神に問うという意味合いで歌を詠んだのでしょう。

Shimogamo Shrine, along with the Kamogawa Delta, serves as a symbol of the Kamigyo Ward, Demachiyanagi area, and has become a cherished place of relaxation for the local residents. While a bit distant from KeFU, the shrine hosts events such as the Aoi Matsuri, Mitarashi Festival, and Yabusame, providing seasonal attractions. Well-known as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the shrine appears in the Tale of Genji’s ‘Suma’ chapter. In this chapter, Hikaru Genji, suspected of rebellion against the emperor, composes a poem in the Shimogamo Shrine’s Mitarashi no Mori, expressing his uncertainty about staying in the troubled world and entrusting his fate to the gods. At that time, Mitarashi no Mori was considered a sacred grove, and it was believed that entering it with ill intentions would bring divine punishment. In his poem, Genji, burdened with an unjust accusation, sought guidance from the gods about his innocence.
