仁和4年 (紀元後888年)、宇多天皇によって建てられた寺院です。
平成6年に世界遺産に登録され、春は御室桜、秋には紅葉が楽しめる景勝地の1つとなっております。また、京都三大門のひとつである「二王門」が道路に面しているといった珍しい特徴もあり、門をくぐると広々とした境内に国宝「金堂」や重要文化財となっている「五重塔」や「御影堂」、「観音堂」などが拝観いただけます。
源氏物語の『若菜上』の章で、朱雀院は女三宮を光源氏に託して、自身は『西山なる御寺』に出家しますが、その御寺が仁和寺であると言われています。

Ninna-ji Temple was built in 888A.D. by Emperor Uda. The temple was registered as a world cultural heritage in 1994, and it is well known for its spectacular view of the latest fully blooming cherry trees in the spring, the autumn leaves in the fall, and having one of the three biggest gates in Japan. The gate is considered as a unique feature to be seen in the temples of Kyoto, since it is facing the road. Once walking through the gate, you will be able to enjoy seeing national treasures and important cultural properties.
In the chapter “Wakana (Spring Shoots)” of The Tale of Genji, Empress Akashi, entrusting her daughter to Hikaru Genji, enters the monastery referred to as the “temple on the western hills” (西山なる御寺). It is said that this temple is identified as the Jingo-ji Temple.
