京都五山第三位の建仁寺。本尊は十一面観音菩薩坐像。1202年に将軍源頼家が寺域を寄進し、栄西禅師を開山として建立されました。建立時は天台・密教・禅の三宗兼学の道場でしたが、1259年に蘭渓道隆が入寺してから純粋に禅寺の道場となりました。明治時代の廃仏毀釈、神仏分離により、境内が半分近く縮小され、今に至ります。京都国立博物館に収蔵されている風神雷神図のレプリカがあったり、法堂の天井絵の双龍図を見ることができます。美しいお庭で禅を組みながらゆったりとした時間を過ごしてみてはいかがでしょうか。

Kennin-ji, ranked third among Kyoto’s Five Great Zen Temples. Its principal image is a seated statue of the Eleven-Faced Kannon Bodhisattva. Founded in 1202 when Shogun Minamoto no Yoriie donated the temple grounds, it was established with Zen Master Eisai as its founding abbot. Originally a training ground for the three schools of Tendai, Esoteric Buddhism, and Zen, it became a purely Zen training temple after Rankei Dōryū entered the temple in 1259. During the Meiji Restoration’s anti-Buddhist policies and the separation of Shinto and Buddhism, the temple grounds were reduced by nearly half, remaining so to this day. Visitors can see a replica of the Wind and Thunder Gods painting, now housed in the Kyoto National Museum, and the twin dragon painting on the ceiling of the Hōdō (Lecture Hall).
