豊臣秀吉の正室であるねねが建立したお寺。当時は珍しい恋愛結婚でした。秀吉にゆかりのある品々や建築を間近で見ることができます。開山堂は秀吉の御座船が使われており、その奥の天井にはねねの御所車が使われています。霊屋はねねのお墓となっており、ねねの像の下にお骨が埋められています。ねねの像の横には秀吉像があり、二人の愛の強さを感じる場所となっております。このお寺は徳川家康の援助を受け、建てられており、実は秀吉亡き後の豊臣勢力を京都に押さえ込んでおくための戦略だったのではとも言われています。嵐山の竹林に負けないくらい美しい竹林が境内にあり、人も多くないのでおすすめです。

This temple was built by Nene, the principal wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Their marriage was unusual for the time as it was a love match. Visitors can see items and architecture associated with Hideyoshi up close. The Founding Monk’s Hall uses Hideyoshi’s imperial barge, and the ceiling behind it features Nene’s imperial palanquin. The mausoleum houses Nene’s grave, with her remains buried beneath her statue. Beside Nene’s statue stands one of Hideyoshi, creating a place where one can feel the strength of their love. This temple was built with the support of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and some speculate it was actually a strategic move to keep the Toyotomi forces in check within Kyoto after Hideyoshi’s death. The temple grounds feature a bamboo grove as beautiful as the famous one in Arashiyama, and since it’s less crowded, it’s highly recommended.
